FR4 vs Rogers PCB: Which Material Should You Choose?

Compare FR4 and Rogers PCB materials by cost, dielectric loss, frequency performance, thermal stability, and common applications.

FR4 is the standard PCB substrate for most electronics. Rogers materials are premium laminates used when RF performance, low loss, and high-frequency stability matter more than price.

When FR4 is the right choice

  • Consumer electronics
  • Industrial controls
  • Power supplies
  • General digital boards

When Rogers is the right choice

  • RF and microwave circuits
  • 5G modules
  • Radar systems
  • High-frequency antennas

Cost difference

FR4 is much cheaper and easier to source. Rogers material can cost several times more, and lead time is usually longer. That means you should only select Rogers when the electrical requirement truly needs it.

Practical recommendation

If your design is below a few GHz and loss is not critical, FR4 is usually enough. If insertion loss, impedance stability, or phase accuracy matter, Rogers becomes worth the premium.
