Copper Weight PCB Guide: 0.5oz, 1oz, 2oz and More

Understand PCB copper weight, current carrying capacity, thermal behavior, and when to choose 0.5oz, 1oz, 2oz, or heavy copper.

Copper weight defines the thickness of copper foil on the PCB. It affects current capacity, voltage drop, thermal performance, and manufacturing cost.

Common options

  • 0.5oz for fine traces and compact signal routing
  • 1oz as the standard general-purpose choice
  • 2oz for stronger current handling
  • 3oz and above for power electronics and heavy current

Practical advice

Do not increase copper weight automatically. Many boards work perfectly at 1oz. Move to 2oz or higher only when current, thermal load, or reliability requirements justify it.
