Custom PCB Manufacturer: How to Specify Non-Standard Requirements

Learn how to communicate custom PCB requirements clearly, including special materials, unusual dimensions, exotic finishes, and unique mechanical features.

Not every PCB fits a standard spec sheet. Custom requirements — unusual shapes, special materials, tight impedance, hybrid stackups — need clear communication between designer and manufacturer.

Common custom requirements

  • Non-standard board outline
  • Controlled impedance with specific tolerance
  • Mixed material stackups like FR-4 plus Rogers
  • Heavy copper for power applications
  • Edge plating or castellated holes
  • Blind, buried, or micro vias

How to specify clearly

  • Include fabrication notes in your Gerber set
  • Provide a stackup diagram for multilayer boards
  • List impedance targets with tolerance
  • Mention any mechanical requirements like thickness tolerance or warpage limits
